Founded by Thomas Oliver in 1895, the Oliver Typewriter company of Chicago sold over a million machines before it went bust in 1928. The Oliver typewriters were the first of the down strike models which allowed "visible print" when typing. A British company bought the rights to the company and continued typewriter production until the end of the 1950s.
